History of Southmayd, Texas

Railroad Town to Growing Suburb

The city of Southmayd is in Grayson County, Texas about seven miles west of Sherman on State Highway 56 and is bisected by Texas State Highway 289, which runs north-south.

Like many north Texas communities, what would become known as Southmayd was first settled in the mid-1800s as a farm and ranch community but would be forever changed with the arrival of the railroad.  In this case, the community was forever changed with the arrival of the Texas and Pacific Railway tracks and the establishment of a rail station on land donated by D. S. Southmayd in the early 1880s. The newly created townsite was named Southmayd in honor of his contribution, and by 1881, a general merchandise store was opened which also included the establishment of the first post office.

Over the next 20 years, Southmayd continued to undergo change and growth, and by 1904, the population had increased to over 130 people. The growth of Southmayd continued and although the community was affected by the Great Depression, the population increased to 250 people by the mid-1930s, and in 1936, there were nine businesses in operation.

The growth and prosperity of Southmayd faltered after World War II. The railroads were no longer the dominant economic drivers and the small communities like Southmayd could not compete with the opportunities offered in the larger cities of Dallas, Fort Worth, and Sherman. This caused a migration out of rural communities, and by the mid-1970s, the population of Southmayd had dropped to 235 and there were no reported operating businesses.

This stagnant growth continued for the next 20 years, but starting in the mid-1980s, the expansion of Dallas and Sherman began to spill into local rural communities like Southmayd. By the year 1990, the population of Southmayd had climbed above 640 residents and the town was home to several newly established businesses. This slow but steady growth continued and by the year 2000, the population had risen to over 990 residents.

Seeing the explosive growth in nearby communities, the Mayor and Council of Southmayd collaborated to establish guidelines for the orderly growth of their community while preserving their history and rural charm. In keeping with this mandate, the Planning & Zoning Commission examines proposed developments, requested zoning changes, building plans, and plat proposals, and advises the city leaders on the proposed projects and prospective growth.

Today, Southmayd covers a total of 2.80 square miles with a population of over 1,100 people and is just entering a period of accelerated growth and change.
