History of Krum, Texas

Railroad Depot to Growing Suburb

Krum is a small but growing town that is seven miles from the City of Denton, Texas. Like many other North Texas Towns, Krum was created in conjunction with the arrival of a rail line. In the mid-1880s, the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway established a rail line through western Denton County and bought 200 acres from Mr. L.L. Finley for the establishment of a train depot and townsite that the railroad named Krum, in honor of the railroad official Charles K. Krum.

By 1887, the train depot and section house were completed along with the first residential home in the community that was built to house the railroad’s agent. With the railroad came growth. By 1888, a post office opened, and by 1892, Krum had a population of about 75. The telephone and telegraph arrived in 1989, and by 1900, the community had a blacksmith, general store, and a large steam-powered flour mill. During that time, wheat was the primary crop and due to the area’s rich soil, Krum became known as one of the greatest inland wheat shipping centers in the country.

By 1905, there were a grain mill and 3-grain elevator storage facilities operating in Krum. Unfortunately, disaster struck in 1915 when the grain mill burned down, and a short while later, market changes forced the closure of the remaining grain elevator storage facilities. During the next 10 years, Krum continued to grow slowly, and by 1925, the population was around 750. With the arrival of the automobile and the Great Depression, the population of Krum started to decrease. Following World War II, the population of Krum stayed low with only about 400 residents.

The 1970s brought a population surge to the Dallas Fort Worth area which started driving people north in search of reasonably priced suburban homes. The development of Interstate Highway 35 made commuting in and out of the city quick and easy, which attracted people to Krum, and by 1985, there were about 1,000 residents. The growth continued, and by 2000, the population almost doubled. By 2010 the population had doubled again to over 4,000 people.

Today, Krum is a small but vibrant suburb with 2.5 square miles of land and a population of 5,000 and growing.
