    Farming Settlement to Growing Suburb

    The city of Kaufman is a suburb of Dallas, Texas, and the county seat of Kaufman County, located near the intersection of State Highway 34, State Highway 243, and U.S. Highway 175.

    Before the arrival of settlers, the area was inhabited by the Caddo, Cherokee, Comanche, Delaware, and Kickapoo Indians who migrated throughout the area hunting game and foraging for food.

    In the early 1840s, a group of 40 families from Mississippi arrived in the area. These settlers were led by Dr. William P. King, who had purchased 2½ square miles of land. Shortly thereafter, King constructed a security outpost on a hilltop that overlooked the area and Dr. King’s home. The fort provided security for the area settlers and became known as King Fort and the local creek that provided freshwater became known as King’s Creek. The security provided by the Fort encouraged other families to build their homes and buildings in the area. Over the next few years, other settlers arrived and the community became known as Kingsboro.

    Kingsboro was originally part of Henderson County but in 1846, the Texas Legislature took a portion of Henderson County and created Kaufman County. The county was named after David Spangler Kaufman who was a lawyer, Indian fighter, and later became a well-respected politician. In 1849, the first post office was established in Kingsboro. The area continued to grow, and by the early 1950s, Mrs. Francis Taber, former wife of Dr. King, donated a large tract of land to the county. With this donation, the community of Kingsboro was renamed Kaufman and became the Kaufman County seat. In late 1851, the Kaufman County government offices were transferred to the town of Kaufman where they remain to this day.

    By 1860, the first Kaufman newspaper was published, and in 1872, the City of Kaufman was officially incorporated with a population of about 500 people. The year 1881 brought tremendous growth to Kaufman. Apart from Kaufman being reincorporated, the Texas Trunk Line railroad arrived in Kaufman. Two years later, the Texas Central Railroad completed their rail line connecting Kaufman to Dallas and with the two rail lines, Kaufman became the trading and economic center in the area. The railroads spurred additional growth and by 1884 Kaufman had about 1,000 residents, over 35 businesses, several churches, and two schools. To service the financial needs of the community, in the late 1880s the City of Kaufman welcomed the opening of their first bank.

    At the beginning of the 1900s, Kaufman had over 2,200 residents that were served by 50 plus businesses, and residents were kept informed of daily events by 3 different newspapers. Between the early 1900s and the mid-1930s, the growth of Kaufman stalled and the population remained virtually unchanged. During World War II a prisoner of war camp was located in Kaufman that was known as Camp Kaufman and by the end of the war, the population was about 2,600 with over 70 businesses and home to the areas first manufacturing plant.

    Over the next 45 years, the City of Kaufman experienced slow but steady growth that was briefly interrupted by a tornado that caused significant damage in 1963. By the early 1990s, the population of the City of Kaufman exceeded 5,000 and like many other suburbs, it was being greatly influenced by the explosive growth of Dallas. Over the next 20 years, the continued rapid growth of Dallas would spur the growth of the surrounding suburbs, and by 2010, the population of Kaufman was over 6,700 residents.
