History of Fate, Texas
Railroad Town to Growing Suburb
Fate, Texas is a far eastern suburb of Dallas that is located in northern Rockwall County and is bisected by US Interstate 30 about 28 miles from downtown Dallas.
The community which would later become the City of Fate was settled shortly after the Civil War in the 1860s. Lafayette Brown, one of the area’s early settlers, was given the nickname “Fate” by his wife, which became the community’s name.
By 1880, the town had a post office and a population of 75, with two shops, two cotton gins, and a school to educate the children. In 1886, Dr. Wylie T. Barnes platted a new settlement on his property about a half-mile northeast of the Fate community, naming it Barnes City, in anticipation of the arrival of the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad.
Later that year, the railroad was completed, and the people and businesses of Fate relocated to Barnes including the Fate post office. In early 1887, to avoid the hassle and cost of applying for a new post office, the residents of Barnes decided to change the name of the community to Fate. By 1890, the community had fifteen businesses, a two-room school, two churches, and a population of about 100 people.
Presbyterians founded the first church in Fate in 1894, and the first rural mail route in Texas started in 1899 from Fate. Fate’s first bank opened in 1907. The community continued to grow and prosper, and in 1908, the city of Fate was officially incorporated. The newly formed city was further enhanced after World War I when a federal highway was built through the area.
The small community hit a rough patch starting in the 1920s and continuing through the 1930s. Although agriculture remained the area’s primary industry, better roads and automobiles enabled merchants to easily operate from other communities and many of the local businesses shut down or relocated to larger cities. The young city was able to retain a bank, a pharmacy, and a few shops remained operational, but over the next 10 years, the city continued to struggle with the population falling to below 200 in 1930 and dropping below 130 by the year 1940.
Fate is proud to be the birthplace of Ralph Moody Hall. He was an American politician and represented the United States for the Fourth Congressional District of Texas from 1981 to 2015. He was first elected in 1980 and chaired the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee.
Fate lost people and businesses to the growing cities of Dallas and Fort Worth in the 1940s and 1950s. During the 1940s, the number of companies in Fate fell from fifteen to six. As with most North Texas cities, in the mid to latter half of the 1900s, Fate started to see a slow increase in population as Dallas area residents and newcomers were attracted to the small town.
In the 1970s, a local housing developer started to take an interest in Fate and the City Council approved the development of the Woodcreek subdivision. The new community brought some growth but over the next 30 years, it was very slow, albeit steady. This started to change in the year 2000 with the development of the Sleepy Hollow, Northview, and Melody Ranch subdivisions. This led to an explosion of growth, and between 2000 and 2021, the city added hundreds of new homes and the population increased from less than 500 to over 6,300 in just 10 years.
Today, Fate is a growing suburban community that covers 12.02 square miles with a population that exceeds 15,600 people.
