History of Josephine, Texas

Railroad Town to Rural Suburb

Josephine is a city situated in the southeastern portion of Collin County, Texas with a small portion on the east that extends into Hunt County and is an outer northeastern suburb of Dallas. The community is also in the heart of the fertile lands known as the Blackland Prairies and is about 4 miles east of Lavon Lake.

The community was established in 1888 when the land was donated to serve as the townsite and rail line depot for the St. Louis, Arkansas, and Texas Railway that established a rail line through the area. The community was named Josephine after the daughter of J. C. Hubbard, who generously donated the land needed to create the townsite and railroad depot.

The first general store in Josephine was established by E. A. Jordan and Joseph M. Stubblefield. In mid-1888, Mr. Stubblefield was appointed as Josephine’s first postmaster and the post office was operated from his store. During the same period, another nearby community was established on land donated by Mr. Reed. The community was centered around the Methodist Church which also served as a school. The community was known as Reed’s Chapel, but ultimately, it would be absorbed by Josephine and the church land would later become the Josephine Cemetery.

The railroad brought economic opportunity, and Josephine quickly became the regional economic and transportation hub for local farmers and ranchers. In the early 1900s, Josephine also became a hub for the support of the railroad and became a major producer of “Gumbo Gravel” which is a fire-hardened clay stone used to stabilize and protect the railroad tracks by holding the cross ties in place. To create Gumbo Gravel, the railroad dug long coal fire pits and baked the local clay until a hardened claystone was produced. Five of these huge pits were dug around Josephine, which is now filled with water and are community lakes.

During the early 1900s, the population of Josephine reached over 200 people, and by 1920, the population of Josephine increased to about 500 residents. This growth and prosperity continued, and by 1930, Josephine had a public school system, a bank, electricity, paved roads, and 15 businesses that served the needs of the community. Then came the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl years, which devastated North Texas communities, including Josephine.

Between 1930 and 1950, the businesses and population of Josephine plummeted. In 1955, the City of Josephine was officially incorporated, but by 1960, the population dropped below 300 people. Over the next 10 years, the community stabilized, and the population remained just below 300 residents. The 1970s ushered in a period of slow but steady growth, and by 1980, the population exceeded 410 people. By 1990, the city had over 500 people. This period of slow, steady growth continued for the next 20 years, and by 2010, the population had reached 800 people.

Today, Josephine is a fast-growing and thriving city that covers 1.8 square miles. It has entered a period of accelerated growth with the population doubling over the last 10 years and is now home to over 2,000 people.
