History of Ponder, Texas
Farming Community to Growing Suburb
Ponder is a small but growing town that is located west of Denton, Texas at the crossroads of Farm to Market Road 156 and Farm to Market Road 2449. Just like many small north Texas communities, in the 1850s, settlers started to arrive in search of rich farmland that had a steady source of water.
One of the first settlers was Silas Christal, his wife Mary Elizabeth, and their 12 children. The family built their home and oxen-driven grist mill on the west side of what would become Ponder. In 1880, the Christal Family built a school on their property that continued to operate until 1930 when it became part of the Ponder Independent School District. Another early settler was the Wakefield Family that came to Denton County in 1852. Over the years, H. F. Wakefield would acquire most of the land around Ponder and built his home on the east side which is known as “Wakefield Hill.”
In the early days, the land was mostly used as pasture for cattle and farming, but that changed in 1886 when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad purchased a tract of land from W. S. Herndon for a rail line to pass through the community. The railroad named the new depot and surrounding community Gerald, and in 1887, the first train came rolling into town. The name Gerald was already in use, so in 1889, the community was renamed Ponder, in honor of W. A. Ponder, a local landowner and banker.
Cornelius N. Skaggs opened the first business in Ponder in 1893. His general store was followed by a blacksmith shop owned by O. H. Sheppard. In 1889, Ponder was granted a post office that was operated out of the general store with Mr. Skaggs as the postmaster. The community continued to grow, and in 1908, Ponder State Bank was built followed a few years later by the Ponder Hotel. The growth continued, and by 1912, the town had developed its waterworks. By 1914, there were several general stores, a livery, a restaurant, a tailor, a hotel, and a bank. In 1920, Ponder had a population of about 80 residents, and in 1923, the Ponder Independent School District was established.
Before the 1920s, traveling around Ponder during periods of wet weather became almost impossible as the black prairie roads became mud traps with wagons being buried up to their axles and horses trudging through mud up to their bellies. This changed when the roads leading into and around Ponder were first graveled and later paved. By the 1940s, all county roads were graveled, and by 1955, all the roads in the town were blacktopped.
Ponder is also fondly remembered for its rodeo, which was an annual event that started in 1939. It was a huge event for the small town and everyone pitched in to make it happen. It was a great success and attracted visitors from Fort Worth and Oklahoma. The rodeo continued until 1950 when it could no longer compete with the annual rodeo held by the City of Denton. For the next 50 years, Ponder grew slowly but in 2000, growth accelerated, and by 2010, the population had more than doubled.
Today, Ponder is a small but growing suburb that covers 3.2 square miles and has a population of about 2,300 residents.
