History of Greenville, Texas
Farming Community to Thriving County Seat
The City of Greenville is sixty miles northeast of Dallas on Interstate Highway 30 and the county seat of Hunt County. In 1846, Hunt County was created by an act of the state legislature which also named the to-be-established Greenville as the county seat to honor Gen. Thomas J. Green, a general in the Texas Army and later a Republic of Texas congressmen.
The location of Greenville was chosen by the residents of the newly created county, who selected a 640-acre parcel of land donated by McQuinney Howell Wright, one of the early settlers who was also a surveyor. To fund the new county, the 640-acre parcel was divided into lots and sold at auction in early 1847. The auction was a success and the proceeds from the sale were used to construct a county courthouse. The City of Greenville was officially incorporated in early 1852.
The area was occupied by farmers and their families, and for the next 30 years, the primary crop was corn and the main livestock was hog farms. With the arrival of the railroad in 1880, farmers were able to export their produce and switched to growing cotton. The rich Blackland soil of Greenville was ideal for growing cotton and Greenville soon became the preferred cotton supplier of the finest mills in Manchester and Liverpool, England. Cotton farming soon became the primary crop, and in 1911 and 1912, the farms around Greenville produced world record bales of cotton.
A few years after the first railroad arrived, several other rail lines were established which also made Greenville the transportation hub of the region. Progress continued and in the late 1800s, Greenville became the first city in Texas to have municipal water service and an electrical generating plant. By 1900, the population in Greenville was about 8,500, and by 1925, Greenville had over 40 manufacturing facilities, 375 commercial establishments, and a population of around 12,000. During this time, the economy began to slowly shift from agriculture to industrial.
World War II brought an airfield to Greenville which was named Majors Field for Lieutenant Truett Majors of Greenville, the first person from the area killed in World War II. After the war, a portion of the base was leased by Texas Engineering and Manufacturing Company which overhauled aircraft, mainly for the military. In later years, the firm grew, merged with larger firms, and became the largest employer in Greenville. Additional industries followed, and by 1990, Greenville had about 23,000 residents and over 400 businesses.
Today, Greenville covers 33 square miles with over 28,000 residents and is home to several Fortune 500 companies.
