History of Oak Point, Texas
Farming Community to Lakeside Suburb
The City of Oak Point is a lakeside suburb of Dallas, Texas located on the shores of Lewisville Lake about 40 miles north of Dallas. Settlers started arriving in the 1840s, attracted by an ample supply of trees for timber, a steady water source, and rich soil that was good for farming.
The area that is Oak Point and much of North Texas was promoted to settlers with a promise of free land. Peters Colony, which was originally from Kentucky, entered into a contract with the Republic of Texas to survey 16,400 square miles of North Texas land and promote the area to potential settlers who upon settling in the area would be given 640 acres of land. To fulfill the task, Peters created the Peters Land Grant Company. From 1841 to 1848, he recruited 2,200 families to settle in North Texas. These settlers became known as the Peters Colonists.
As the population of Dallas grew, so did the need for water and flood protection. To meet these needs, the city adopted a plan to create a lake by damming the Elm Fork of the Trinity River in Denton County. In 1928, the City of Dallas began construction of the lake, which was named Lake Dallas. The newly created lake was nine miles long, and three miles wide, and provided the majority of the water to the residents of Dallas for the next 30 years.
This newly created lake was adjacent to the area that is now Oak Point and the small community became a lakeside community. The community was not on a rail line or a major transportation route so the area grew very slowly between 1930 and 1970. With the explosion of automobiles, highways, and roads, the sleepy lakeside community started to change. In 1976, the City of Oak Point was officially incorporated as a general law municipality and by 1980, the population was approximately 380. Over the next 20 years, Oak Point would see its population climb to over 1,700. This rapid growth continued and by 2010, the population was over 2,700.
Today, Oak Point is a growing lakeside suburb of Dallas that has jurisdiction over approximately 8.7 square miles and has a population of about 5,700 residents.
