History of Hurst, Texas
Farming Community to Thriving Suburb
Hurst is a suburb of Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas in Northeast Tarrant County that in the early 1800s was sparsely inhabited by American Indians.
Settlers did not begin to move into the area until after the establishment of the Bird’s Fort military outpost, named after Captain Jonathan Bird, in 1841 and the signing of a peace treaty with the local Indian tribes in late 1843.
The Arwine family from Indiana was one of the early settlers that came to the area in 1865, and the area became known as the Red Sulphur Springs or the Arwine Community. Other families who were friends with the Arwine family arrived from Indiana including the Souder, Anderson, Brown, Robertson, and Sexton families.
Another major contributor to the establishment of Hurst was William L. Hurst, who arrived from Tennessee in the 1870s with his wife and seven children. William Hurst was a popular fiddle-playing entertainer but is best known for negotiating a deal with the Rock Island Railroad. In the early 1900s, he granted a right-of-way on his land for construction of a rail line connecting Fort Worth to Dallas, but in return, the Rock Island Railroad would build a station on his land and it would be named after his family. At the time the Rock Island Train Station was built in 1903, the surrounding community officially adopted the name, Hurst.
Over the next 45 years, Hurst saw little growth but that changed when Bell Helicopter opened a large production plant in Hurst that drove advancements in the helicopter industry and provided 100’s of jobs. In late 1952, Hurst incorporated and had a population of 2,700 which increased to more than 20,000 by the mid-1960s. Development and economic opportunity were further enhanced with the opening of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in 1974. By the end of the 1970s, Hurst had matured, and the period of rapid expansion and growth came to an end.
Today, Hurst is a thriving suburban community that covers about 10 square miles with almost 40,000 residents.
