History of Joshua, Texas
Railroad Town to Thriving Suburb
Joshua is a suburb of Fort Worth, Texas that is bisected by State Highway 174 located in the north-central portion of Johnson County and is about 22 miles south of downtown Fort Worth.
The area that is now known as Joshua was first called Caddo Grove and was about 2 miles west of where Joshua is today. Caddo Grove was a budding community until the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe railroad came to the area. In 1880, the railroad purchased land for the establishment of a rail line and platted a town center which they named Joshua, in honor of the biblical figure. The rail line was completed and the first trains started to arrive in 1881, and in the year 1882, the first store and post office were opened. The growth and economic opportunity provided by the rail line doomed the small community and the residents of Caddo Grove relocated to Joshua.
By 1890, the town of Joshua had about 300 residents, two steam-powered corn mills, a cotton gin, a hotel, a general store, a newspaper, and the first school opened. Unfortunately, the community suffered crippling fires in 1900 and 1912 but the community quickly recovered from these disasters, and in 1904, the Citizen’s Banking Company was established and 2 years later, the first public water system was built. The second rail line, the Fort Worth South Traction Line interurban service, arrived in 1912 and connected Fort Worth to Cleburne with a train stop in Joshua. This brought additional growth and opportunity, and by 1914, the population of Joshua had increased to approximately 820 people.
Over the next 35 years, the growth of the city waned and when the City of Joshua was officially incorporated in the mid-1950s with Ted Strube as its first mayor, the population had dropped to about 550 people. The stagnation and limited growth continued for another 5 years but that started to change in the 1960s, and by 1970, the population had risen to about 920 people with approximately 14 businesses.
The growth accelerated in the 1970s, and by 1980, Joshua had 58 businesses, some of which manufactured aluminum products, trailers, windows, and leather goods. The availability of work increased the population in the year 1980 to about 1,400 people. The economic growth continued, and by 1990, the population had doubled to over 3,800. Over the next years, businesses and populations continued to grow, albeit at a less rapid pace, and by 2000, the city had about 4,500 residents, and by the year 2010, the city was home to over 5,900 people.
Today, the City of Joshua is still a small rural but growing suburb of Fort Worth that covers 9.20 square miles with over 9,000 people who call Joshua home.
