History of Weatherford, Texas
Frontier Town to Historical City
The City of Weatherford is the county seat of Parker County in north-central Texas and is a far western suburb of Fort Worth.
The earliest recorded settlers can be traced back to 1854 when the Methodist Reverend Pleasant Tackett was the leader of 15 families who relocated to the area and established the First United Methodist Church. The town of Weatherford was created the following year and was named after Thomas Jefferson Weatherford who co-authored the State bill establishing Parker County. He served in the state senate from 1853 to 1857.
During its first decade, Weatherford became the principal frontier settlement in North Texas. It likewise served as not only a county seat but also acted as a haven for the early settlers who were attacked by a series of Indian raids for almost 25 years. In the 1870s, when the raids became less hostile and abated, the city grew and prospered.
The end of the civil war ushered in the era of the railroads but before the 1880s, rail connections in Texas were almost non-existent. This rapidly changed in the 1880s when Texas rail lines were being rapidly developed. One of the first rail lines was the Texas and Pacific Railway which reached Weatherford in the early 1880s. This was followed by the establishment of the Colorado and Santa Fe line in 1887, and the Mineral Wells and Northwestern Railway in 1891. During this time, Weatherford quickly became the shipping and commercial center for Parker County farmers and ranchers.
While the basic economic activity during that time was agricultural, Weatherford has also a thriving secondary economy of manufacturing, trade, and banking. The population of Weatherford soared to over 5,000 in the 1890s with 100 registered businesses including three banks, four hotels, and three newspapers, and was home to three churches and Weatherford College.
Weatherford continued to thrive in the 20th century and has remained the agricultural business center of Parker County, and during the 1920s, it saw the introduction of more businesses involved in oil and furniture manufacturing. However, when the Great Depression struck the United States, agriculture and the new industries of oil, furniture, lumber, and plastic fell victim to the failing economy and economic downturn. Weatherford’s economy and agriculture were further damaged during the Dust Bowl when severe dust storms swept the region that killed people, livestock, and crops.
Starting in 1940, Weatherford entered a period of slow but steady growth, and by 1950, the population exceeded 8,000 people. The construction of the US Highway system in the mid-1900s, including US Highways 180 and 80, allowed Weatherford to remain a strategic retail and shipping point for area farmers and ranchers. Between 1950 and 1970, the growth of Weatherford accelerated with the population reaching 11,750 people in 1970. Between 1970 and 1980, the population stagnated but accelerated growth returned, and by 1990, the population had increased to 14,800 people and was home to over 400 businesses. By the year 2010, the population exceeded 25,000 people.
Today, Weatherford has a bustling commercial center and historical shopping district full of restaurants and shops. The city covers 28.94 square miles and is home to more than 33,000 people.
