History of Crowley, Texas
Railroad Depot to Growing Suburb
Crowley is a city located mostly in Tarrant County, Texas that was first settled by pioneers in the late 1840s.
The early settlers chose the area because of the fertile ground as well as the steady water source provided by Deer Creek, which enabled them to establish farms and livestock ranches. Later, when the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway built pens and train tracks through the area, it became the community center. In 1885, the first train station depot was constructed and was named Crowley, in honor of S. H. Crowley, the master of transportation for the railroad.
In 1882, the first post office was opened and Crowley was listed as a town on the 1885 Railroad and County Map of Texas. The area was primarily used for dairy farming, ranching, and railroad-related businesses. The area continued to grow, albeit slowly for the next 80 years.
In February 1951, the residents voted to officially incorporate into a town and retained the name Crowley. In late 1972, the members of the town council voted to convert the town of Crowley to a city. From 1960 through 2010, the city of Crowley has seen rapid growth with the population exceeding 12,000 by 2010.
Today, Crowley is a growing suburban city that covers approximately 7 square miles and has a population of over 16,000.
